PoTM 2011 May: Lulworth Cove…

Commentary:

Word came through to me that Alex Messenger, the BMC’s Summit mag editor, was after a DWS (deep water soling) image to use in Summit. Something strong and suitable for a DPS (double page spread) was the brief. It’s always nice to get a photo request like that and I’m always keen to help out if at all possible.

Editors like running DPS with text over the image and that was just what Alex was looking to do. Images for DPSs have some key requirements. Firstly they need to be a fairly constant colour/subject matter where the text is going to go with nothing too prominent ‘shouting out’ vying for the reader’s attention – after all, the text needs to be easy to read. Also, the subject should be away from the gutter which will run through the middle of the image – ie where the ‘fold’ in the mag will go. Subjects that run over the gutter can finish up looking gnarly if the printing isn’t bang on.

A series of shots sprang immediately to my mind of Gates of Grey Skull (F7b+) at Lulworth Cove. I’d shot them some years before, before I’d switched over to digital in fact. Getting the sheets of tranies out of the file and plugging the lightbox in felt seriously old-skool. I’d forgotten the buzz you get when you look at a sheet of tranies and you see the images really stand out. One of the things that takes some getting used to when you switch to digital is that RAW files always need tweaking in post (processing) before they are ready to use. Not so with transparencies were what you see is what you got!

Anyways, the shot Alex used is above, with Adrian Baxter pulling through the roof on Gates. The scan is from my Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED scanner and finishing was in Nikon Capture. I remember that it was shot on Velia with my F5 and the 17-35mm AFS wide zoom but I’ve no recollection of what shutter speeds or aperture I used. I seem to remember that there’s a wee bit of fill flash in there as well to soften the shadows. Old skool maybe but still packing a punch I’d say; that’s one blue sea!…
