A fickle thing isn’t it the weather! Two day ago the forecast was for a wall-to-wall sunshine weekend in the Pennines, sadly, it turned out a little different than that. Almscliff was to be the venue and bouldering the game. Well we went and we saw and we left – for Malham…

Topping the hill a few miles south of Malham itself you get your first view of the distant Cove. It looked wet – hmmmm; bad move we pondered? Sometimes it pays not to be a deep thinker and to just get on with it. We didn’t (think too much) and we did just get on with it (walking in).

“Doesn’t look too wet” I cracked as we got closer. Wrong –again. It was dripping off most routes. The usual dark streaks that looked ok were in fact running wet and the darker streaks that looked wet were totally soaked and dripping. Still the wind was blowing over the tops and it was sheltered on the Catwalk; better. Heck even the sun made a few (brief) appearances. They say the camera never lies, well just lets say that the following shot of a team on Consenting Adults (F7a/+) shows the rock above the Catwalk at its best. There was maybe a dozen routes tops that dried out sufficiently to do by the end of the day – but that means there’s a heck of a lot that’s wet and gonna stay wet for the foreseeable. Even the first few metres of Raindogs was running. It was great to get moving again on real rock but dry it aint. And judging by the rain clouds that stormed past twice an hour, I figure we had the best of a bad day…

A super-soggy Malhm Cove...

Consenting - always a safe bet but a bit like a desert island today...
